About Rockaway River Country Club

Rockaway River Country Club, nestled in the Rockaway River Valley in Denville, NJ, was founded in 1915 by neighboring year-round and summer residents desiring a recreational and social center.

From a nine-hole "golf links" in 1916 it has become one of the most challenging and best maintained championship courses in the New York area. In 2009 the Club was honored by being selected bu the Metropolitan Golf Association as "Club of the Year". Receiving this prestigious honor put Rockaway River in the same category as Baltusrol, Winged Foot, and Plainfield country clubs. In addition to it's 18-hole layout, astride the Rockaway River, with Golf Shop, practice green, and driving range, it also offers Platform Tennis, four Har-Tru Tennis courts, and a swimming pool. Its new clubhouse, in addition to locker and card-rooms for men and women, houses a full-service restaurant and banquet facilities for the pleasure of members and their guests.

Rockaway River Country Club was member-owned at its inception, as it is today, and has been except for a 12-year period, beginning in 1944, when it was investor-owned by two successive companies.

The members negotiated its re-purchase, effective January 1, 1957, and have since owned and operated the Club for their collective purpose and individual pleasure. Actual ownership rests with up to 300 proprietary members whose non-transferable equal-value bonds gives each equal ownership of the property. They allow annual house and other special memberships certain privileges but allow them no equity or voting rights.

The proprietary members entrust the operation of the Club to a Board of Governors elected by them at the Annual Meeting for overlapping three-year terms. The Board elects its officers.
